What is a dermal filler? Dermal fillers are small gel injections, typically made of hyaluronic acid, filling in wrinkles and adding volume to soft tissue. You can have the treatment in different parts of your face: around the eye, cheeks, mouth, nose and jawline. We can also use it for the treatment of ‘smokers-lines’. You’ll also find the same product used for lip enhancement, where lip filler is administered directly into the lip tissue. How do they work? As we get older, our bodies stop producing collagen and elastin, both of which keep our skin looking young. Fillers add lost volume to your face so that lines are smoothed, and your skin has a younger, more youthful appearance. Experts disagree over when we start losing collagen, but the generally agreed age is around your mid-twenties. Your collagen and elastin levels then decline at approximately 2% per year. Your body will have stopped producing it altogether by your late twenties.
