Tax on vehicles

Drivers have until March 18 to give their thoughts on the new Electric Vehicle Excise Duty (eVED) that was announced in last year’s Autumn Budget.

Chancellor Rachel Reeves went over the details of eVED, which will charge electric car owners 3p per mile and hybrid car owners 1.5p per mile starting in 2028.

The government is making these changes to help it keep track of its money Fuel duty receipts are going down as more people switch to electric cars and fewer people buy diesel and petrol.

Tax on petrol

Rachel Reeves, the Chancellor, said that the planned increase in fuel duty on March 23 2026, would not happen. Instead, it would be delayed by five months.

In March 2022, the fuel duty rate was cut by 5p per litre. This happened after Russia invaded Ukraine and made fuel prices go up.

To undo the cut in the fuel duty, you will need to pay one penny in September, two pennies in December, and two pennies in March 2027.

Rates for advice on fuel

This is the first time this year that HM Revenue and Customs has changed the AFRs for people who drive cars that run on petrol diesel electricity or LPG.

People who drive company cars have to follow AFRs. The rates are meant to cover the cost of using company cars for business travel or the cost of petrol for personal travel.

Driving tests

Starting on March 31 2026 learner drivers will only be able to change their driving test appointment twice instead of the current six times.

You might be able to change the date or time of your test, move it to a different test center, or switch appointments with another learner driver who already has a test booked.

Drivers will still be able to make more than one change at once, such as changing the date and the test center at the same time.

Statement for Spring

Rachel Reeves will give the first financial update from the government of the year on March 3, 2026. This is because Labour is under pressure to lower costs for Britons.

Taxes shouldn’t change a lot The Labour MP for Leeds West and Pudsey could, however, give updates on changes to the fuel duty or the pay per mile car tax

She could also tell us more about the digital driver’s license which is expected to be available in all 50 states in the next few months.
