Tax on cars
Drivers have until March 18 to tell the Government what they think about the new Electric Vehicle Excise Duty (eVED) that was announced in last year’s Autumn Budget.
Chancellor Rachel Reeves explained the details of eVED, which will charge electric car owners 3p per mile and hybrid car owners 1.5p per mile starting in 2028.
The changes are being made to help the government keep track of its money because fewer people are buying petrol and diesel, and fuel duty receipts keep going down as people switch to electric cars.
Tax on fuel
Chancellor Rachel Reeves said that the planned rise in fuel duty on March 23, 2026, would not happen. Instead, it would be pushed back by five months.
The 5p per litre cut to the fuel duty rate was put in place in March 2022, after Russia invaded Ukraine and caused fuel prices to rise.
There will be three steps to undo the fuel duty cut: one penny in September, two pennies in December, and two pennies in March 2027.
Fuel rates for advice
This is the first time this year that HM Revenue and Customs has made changes to AFRs for drivers of petrol, diesel, electric, and LPG vehicles.
AFRs apply to people who drive company cars. The rates are meant to cover the cost of business travel in company cars or the cost of fuel used for personal travel.
Tests for driving
Starting on March 31, 2026, learner drivers will only be able to change their driving test booking twice instead of the current six times.
You might be able to change the date or time of your test, move it to a different test center, or switch appointments with another learner driver who already has a test booked.
Drivers will still be able to make more than one change at a time, like changing the date and test center at the same time.
Spring Statement
As Labour is under pressure to lower costs for Britons, Rachel Reeves will give the first financial update from the government of the year on March 3, 2026.
There shouldn’t be any big changes to taxes. However, the Labour MP for Leeds West and Pudsey could give updates on changes to fuel duty or pay-per-mile car taxes.
She could also give us new information about the digital driver’s license, which is expected to be available all over the country in the next few months.
