If you’re tired of the dark and moody colours that have been popular for nails for the past few months, this is your sign to change things up. As the winter oxbloods and dark midnight blues fade away and the clean-girl neutral manicures of January start to feel a little too strict, spring invites a softer, more complex approach to your manicure moodboard and the colours we’re choosing for our nails.
The good news for people who don’t want sweet pastels? Daisy Kalnina, founder and CEO of The GelBottle Inc., says, “This season is all about polished nonchalance.” “Of course, there is a move toward colour injections, but not in a way that feels forced.” She says that the colours this season are different from the usual bright pastels and are instead muted, cool-toned shades.
Juanita Huber-Millet, who started the high-end nail salon Townhouse, agrees and says that this spring is about escaping while still being careful. “Think soft, sun-warmed colours and a more thoughtful way to use pastels,” she says. We are moving away from bright, saturated colours and toward milky, muted tones and warm, skin-flattering shades that feel new but still understated. This colour scheme is based on travel, light, and escaping—colors that look like little pictures of a beautiful place.

This change in nail colour trends is similar to the colour stories we’ve seen on the spring/summer runways, where designers balanced bright colours with softer, sun-warmed tones. Fendi used bright yellows and blues with graphic prints, while Erdem used romantic flowers and colours close to lilac. Burberry added fresh greens and neutrals with a heritage feel to its spring palette.
