The UK’s Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) has issued a warning stating that there is no aviation fuel available at any international airports in Cuba. The FCDO urged travelers from the UK to be cautious and stay updated on the evolving situation in the country.
The Cuban government has confirmed that aviation fuel shortages are affecting all international airports in Cuba. The FCDO’s statement, issued on Thursday, March 5, highlighted the severe disruption to essential infrastructure, ongoing power outages, and an overall fuel crisis in the country.
Impact on Flights and Airlines
As a result of the fuel shortage, the FCDO noted that some airlines, including Air France, have suspended their flights to Cuba until mid-June. Other airlines are rerouting their flights to alternative transportation hubs. The FCDO further stated, “These conditions are severely affecting access to reliable transport, medical care, communication, and other essential services.”
Authorities have imposed fuel rationing to conserve limited supplies, causing a reduction in public services and disruptions in healthcare, education, transportation, and tourism operations.
Airport Closures and Rerouted Flights
José Marti International Airport’s Terminal 2, which handles flights to the United States and some charter flights, has been closed. As a result, flights have been rerouted to Terminal 3. Furthermore, LATAM and all Canadian airlines have stopped flights to and from Cuba, while other airlines are reevaluating their routes.
The last flight from Havana to Paris Charles de Gaulle is scheduled for March 28, with Air France announcing the suspension of flights between Paris and Havana from March 29 to June 14.
Essential Services and Emergency Measures
In response to the growing crisis, Cuban authorities have introduced fuel rationing and scaled back public services. The FCDO stated that healthcare, education, transport, and tourism operations have undergone temporary changes, which are expected to have a major impact on residents and visitors alike.
Recommendations for Travelers in Cuba
If you’re planning to leave Cuba, the FCDO recommends checking with your airline or tour operator for the latest updates. It’s essential to ensure that your travel documents are in order and that you have the necessary visas for further travel.
If you are currently in Cuba, carefully consider the necessity of your stay. Prepare for significant disruptions by conserving food, fuel, water, and mobile phone batteries. Be ready to adjust your plans swiftly as the situation may escalate unexpectedly.
