It can be hard to learn how to use an eyebrow pencil the right way. It might look like a simple task, but it’s easy to go too far. And no one wants to look at old pictures and wonder why none of their friends told them their eyebrows were too dark.
Over the years, I’ve spent a lot of time trying to find the best ways to bush up my brows, shape them to fit my face, and define each hair Because my hair is a dark brunette, I need to take extra care of my naturally blonde brows. I have to draw the tail by hand because they have only grown halfway across. This isn’t an easy job, but I think I’ve gotten pretty good at it.
Of course, being a beauty editor for six years has helped me learn more. I’ve been able to try out all the newest brow makeup and work with some of the best makeup artists in the world. So, this is everything I know about how to use an eyebrow pencil like a pro.

Here are some tips before you start: Don’t worry about making your eyebrows look the same on both sides.
Everyone knows how hard it is to make winged eyeliner look even. A lot of us try to get our eyebrows just right every day, which makes getting ready in the morning even more annoying than it should be. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve drawn on my eyebrows and then had to keep adding to each side to make them look right.
I didn’t know I was wrong until I heard makeup artist Lisa Potter-Dixon say backstage at Fashion Week that “eyebrows are sisters, not twins concept.” Eyebrows don’t have to be the same on both sides just like faces. In fact, the best way to make your eyebrows look their best on your face is to draw attention to their natural shape and direction. Now that we’ve debunked the myth that eyebrows have to be perfectly symmetrical, let’s get started with the basics.
How to get your eyebrows ready
I like to use a spoolie and eyebrow gel to keep my brows in place, but nothing works better than a bar of soap trick. In the last few years soap brows have become very popular because of the fluffy-brow trend in beauty. There is a whole new line of products that can help you get the look.
Some pros, though, still prefer the old way method. Naoko Scintu is a makeup artist who works with stars like Jodie Comer and Priyanka Chopra regularly. She says, “I swear by Pears soap technique. I just put a little water on it and brush it into my brows, and it stays perfect all day.”
Filling in your eyebrows with a pencil
When you use your eyebrow pencil to draw on each hair stroke, make sure you draw up and not across the brow hair direction. To make the hairlike strokes you need to move the sharp point of the pencil quickly and in small circles motion.
To make your brows look more natural, fill them in vertically or at a 45-degree angle at the most. Don’t ever fill them in from side to side because that looks unnatural. If you pay close attention to how your natural brow hairs grow, you’ll see that they don’t grow across lines. It will look fake if you draw a line that goes against the natural hair growth grain.

This tip isn’t for you if you want your eyebrows to be as thin as they were in the 1990s trend. But if you don’t want that style anymore, pay close attention to this advice.
